Panelled model-building as practiced by HOTE is a special technique and involves the use a lightweight foam core milled at an offset of 12 to 20 mm and finished in epowood.

The time saved during this process makes it an attractive alternative to other methods. The underlying structure of a panelled model is a steel frame, which is covered with wood and foam. This minimizes costs while allowing a high-quality model to be built. Models of this type can even be converted to "see-through" models with minimal additional effort required. Detachable bumpers and other add-on components can also be realized with ease. The finished model is very light, making it easier to bring into position and much easier to transport than comparably heavy plasticine models. Another advantage is the fact that panelled models are highly resistant to pressure marks and changes in temperature. Likewise, panelled models can be refinished and surface milled as often as required, which greatly facilitates design work.

In summary, the panelled model technique represents a cost-effective solution for building precision design models in a short period of time and is therefore a superior alternative to plasticine models throughout the design phase. These benefits could not be realized without close interaction between man and machine. The extremely lightweight models have high tolerances, are rigid in construction, and can be used as design models or inexpensive data reference models. Panelled models can also be used to simulate vehicle interiors as well as exteriors and have become an established automotive design standard for HOTE Studio für Produktdesign.
